According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, there has been a worrying increase in farmer suicides in Karnataka. This contrasts with a decrease seen in the rest of the country.
In 2024, India as a whole recorded a total of 10,546 farmer suicides. However, while many states have reported a decline, Karnataka’s numbers have risen significantly, raising concerns among policymakers and social workers.
The increase in the number of suicides in Karnataka has been attributed to various challenges faced by farmers, such as erratic weather patterns, financial debts, and lack of adequate support systems.
Authorities are now pressured to implement more effective interventions to support farmer welfare and address the underlying issues contributing to this crisis.
